Why Are You Still Driving 4 Hours for a 5-Minute PLC Fix?

Let’s talk about a headache every automation engineer knows too well.

A remote customer calls. Production is down. You spend half a day in traffic, burn through gas, and arrived stressed out—only to find out the whole “emergency” was just a misplaced timer or a minor HMI button issue. You fix it in five minutes, then drive four hours back.

You just wasted a whole billable day for a five-minute tweak.

Today, you don’t even need to be in the same city. With Samkoon’s Ethernet/Wi-Fi hardware and Samkoon Cloud, you can handle these distant support calls right from your office desk.

What Can You Actually Do Remotely?

We built native Ethernet and Wi-Fi into our HMIs and PLCs for one clear reason: to stop useless travel. Through Samkoon Cloud, you get a secure, direct link to your machine anywhere in the world.

  • Remote Downloads: Modify your PLC logic or change an HMI screen layout in your office, and flash the update directly to the machine. No programming cables, no local technicians required.

  • Live Diagnostics: Open your browser or phone to see active alarms, process variables, and exact machine states in real-time. You see what the operator sees.

  • Pre-emptive Troubleshooting: Spot weird data trends or recurring errors before the machine actually trips and shuts down the line.

But is the Cloud Safe for Industrial Control?

The short answer is yes. We know plant managers get nervous about connecting machines to the internet.

Compiled Security: Samkoon’s software uses a tight, compiled architecture. The files running on the hardware are fully encrypted. Your raw source code and proprietary HMI designs cannot be pulled, intercepted, or copied by unauthorized third parties.

Samkoon Solution Sharing | Samkoon Drilling and Tapping Machine Control Solution: Flexible Solutions for Various Parts Machining Needs

Abstract: Drilling and tapping machines are widely used for machining holes in batches of parts, and commonly come in three structures: rotary table, feeder table, and slide table. Samkoon Technology provides an integrated control solution based on PLC, servo, and HMI, supporting complex processes such as drilling, tapping, chamfering, integrated drilling and tapping, and multi-stage machining, and implementing torque detection to protect the taps. The solution balances program simplicity with on-site debugging flexibility, helping equipment manufacturers quickly deliver stable and reliable drilling and tapping equipment.

Project Introduction

In machining, drilling and tapping are the most basic and common processes. To improve efficiency, many manufacturers have begun using automated drilling and tapping machines instead of traditional manual bench drills or single-station machine tools. Based on the different loading and workpiece movement methods, these machines are mainly divided into three categories:

Rotary Drilling and Tapping Machines:The workpiece is mounted on a rotating worktable and passes through different processing stations sequentially as the turntable rotates. Suitable for small to medium-sized regular parts, capable of single-sided or double-sided drilling and tapping, and the number of stations can be increased or decreased according to process requirements.

Feed-type Drilling and Tapping Machines: Primarily for bar stock parts, an automatic feeding mechanism delivers the bar stock to a designated position, processes it, and then automatically unloads it. Common configurations include two-axis, seven-axis (with tool changer), and nine-axis, suitable for multi-process processing of batches of bar stock.

Slide-type Drilling and Tapping Machines: The workpiece is fixed on a slide, and the slide moves to align the workpiece with different machining spindles. Each spindle can be equipped with different tools (such as drilling spindles, tapping spindles, chamfering tools, etc.), and multiple processes can be completed in one round trip of the slide. Common models include one-sided, two-sided, and three-sided models.

Regardless of the structure, the core control requirements are similar: the spindle (which drives the tool to rotate) and the feed axis (which controls the forward and backward movement of the tool or workpiece) must be precisely coordinated, especially during tapping, where the feed axis must move a distance of one thread pitch for every revolution of the spindle. In addition, deep hole machining requires segmented feed and retraction for chip removal, and the ability to detect tap overload to prevent tap breakage.

Solution Configuration

Samkoon Technology’s standard control solution for drilling and tapping machines includes the following components:

Part 1

Controller: Utilizes a Samkoon PRO series PLC (specific model selected based on the number of axes, such as C16X16T+), responsible for logic control, motion command calculation, and communication.

Part 2

Human Machine Interface (HMI): SK series touchscreen (e.g., SK-102QS-G), used to set machining parameters (drilling depth, tapping pitch, segment length, feed/retract speed, etc.), and to display the current station status and torque value in real time.

Part 3

Servo Drive System: Matches an R8 series servo drive system based on the number of axes to control the feed axis, rotary table indexing axis, and slide movement axis. The spindle can use a frequency converter or servo drive, selecting constant speed mode or position/speed mode according to process requirements.

Part 4

Torque Detection: Real-time reading of the servo’s internal torque feedback value via Modbus communication (RS485) between the PLC and the servo drive. When the torque exceeds the set threshold, the PLC immediately alarms and stops machining to prevent tap damage.

Advantages of the Solution

1. Covers Multiple Machining Processes, Flexible and Adjustable Parameters

Our PLC program supports common modes such as drilling, multi-stage drilling, tapping, multi-stage tapping, chamfering (upper chamfer/lower chamfer/both chamfers), integrated drilling and tapping (drill first, then tap), and hollow multi-stage drilling. The depth, speed, and retraction method for each mode can be set individually, and operators can directly modify them on the touchscreen without modifying the program.

2. Precise and Synchronous Tapping, No Pitch Deviation

During tapping, the feed axis and spindle form a virtual electronic gear system. We directly convert the lead screw lead and tap pitch into pulse equivalents. After triggering the interpolation command, the two axes are strictly linked according to the pitch relationship, ensuring the tapped thread profile is complete and free of defects.

3. Multi-stage Drilling Balances Chip Removal and Efficiency

Deep hole machining is most vulnerable to chips clogging the hole wall. We offer two multi-segment drilling methods:

3.1 Fixed-length segmentation: Chips are removed after each segment is drilled, suitable for batch drilling of deep holes with consistent lengths.

3.2 Custom-length segmentation: For holes of varying depths, the feed depth for each segment can be set separately.

4. Torque detection effectively protects the tap and reduces wear.

RS485 communication directly reads the real-time torque value of the servo motor, eliminating the need for additional wiring. During normal machining, the torque value remains stable. If a blind hole, hard material spot, or tap wear is encountered, the torque will suddenly increase, and the system will immediately alarm and stop to prevent tap breakage. Customer debugging is simpler; only a torque threshold needs to be set, significantly reducing the maintenance threshold.

5. Clear program structure facilitates secondary development.

We have written different processes (drilling, tapping, chamfering, etc.) as independent subroutines, which are called by the main program according to the workstation flow. Although rotary, feed, and slide table types have different mechanical structures, the core machining subroutines can be reused. The touchscreen interface is also designed according to the “workstation + process” logic, making it easy for equipment manufacturers to get started.

6. Adaptable to multiple machine models, easy to replicate and promote

This solution has been used on various machine models, including two-axis bar drilling and tapping machines, seven-axis drilling and tapping machines with tool changers, and two-sided sliding table drilling and tapping machines. Whether it’s standard batch production of parts or multi-variety small-batch production, it can be adapted with only parameter adjustments and a few program changes, making it very suitable for equipment manufacturers to standardize shipments.

Samkoon Solution Sharing | Online Laser Pipe Cutting Machine: Samkoon Motion Control Solution Helps Upgrade the Pipe Manufacturing Industry

Abstract: Traditional stainless steel pipe production lines suffer from drawbacks such as high material costs, slow speed, and the need for coolant in sawing methods. Samkoon Technology, based on its self-developed PLC, HMI, and servo system, has launched an online laser pipe cutting machine solution. This solution enables high-speed, synchronized, and precise cutting of pipes, producing clean cuts with an accuracy of ±0.2mm. It helps companies reduce long-term production costs and supports subsequent complex functions such as expanding openings and cutting patterns.

1.Introduction

In the stainless steel pipe manufacturing industry, most production lines in the past used sawing machines. While this equipment is mature, it has several problems: the saw blades wear out quickly, making them high-consumption items; coolant lubrication is required during cutting, which is messy and adds to the process; and the cutting speed is relatively slow, affecting the overall line efficiency.

In recent years, laser cutting technology has begun to enter this field. It eliminates saw blade wear, eliminates the need for liquid cooling, cuts pipes faster, and produces a smoother cut. Simply put, while the initial equipment investment is slightly higher, it becomes more cost-effective in the long run. Therefore, laser-guided in-line pipe cutting machines are becoming an upgraded alternative to traditional sawing machines and have considerable potential for global adoption.

However, laser pipe cutting places higher demands on the control system. The equipment needs to ensure the laser head closely follows the pipe (this is “tracking”), and the positional deviation at the start and end of the cut must be extremely small; otherwise, the cut will be crooked or uneven. Customers typically require an accuracy within ±0.2mm. Furthermore, when cutting square tubes, the laser head must rotate around the tube once, requiring automatic Z-axis height adjustment. These actions put a strain on the controller’s interpolation and response speed.

2. Solution Configuration

Samkoon Technology’s core control solution for this type of online laser tube cutting machine includes the following hardware:

Part 1

Main Control PLC: PRO-C16X16T+ module, responsible for logic operations, motion control, and data interaction.

Part 2

Analog Input Expansion: PRO-E4AO, used to output analog signals, such as controlling laser power or height adjustment.

Part 3

HMI: SK-102QS-G touchscreen, allowing operators to set parameters such as tube length, speed, and cutting mode, and monitor the operating status in real time.

Part 4

Servo Drive System: Depending on the customer model, 4 to 6 R8 series servos are used to drive the feeding axis, tracking axis, rotary axis (for cutting square tubes), and Z-axis, respectively.

This solution adopts a partitioned subroutine structure, writing tracking synchronization, square tube cutting, and height following functions into different program blocks for easy debugging and maintenance. The HMI screen is also designed according to process logic, allowing operators to quickly learn how to use it.

3. Advantages of the Solution

(1) Smoother Synchronization and Less Mechanical Vibration

The tube cutting machine has a large inertia. If it starts too abruptly, the machine will vibrate violently, affecting the cutting quality. We added S-curve acceleration and deceleration to the control algorithm instead of simple linear acceleration. This makes the entire process from the tube being stationary to following the cutting speed very smooth, especially suitable for machines with large inertia.

(2) High Cutting Accuracy and Neat Cuts

By accurately calculating the positional relationship between the main axis (tube travel) and the slave axis (laser head movement) and adding feedforward control, the following error is effectively reduced. On-site measurements with calipers show that the cut position error is basically controlled within ±0.2mm, meeting the delivery requirements of stainless steel pipe manufacturers.

(3) Square Tube Cutting with Automatic Z-Axis Height Adjustment

When cutting square tubes, the distance from the tube surface to the laser head changes with the rotation angle. Our solution links the X-axis, B-axis rotation, and Z-axis height adjuster to maintain the laser head at the same height as the tube surface in real time, ensuring the cutting quality around the tube. For non-linear paths at the four corners, the program automatically breaks them down into multiple continuous interpolation segments to avoid pauses or overheating.

(4) Reduced Long-Term Production Costs

Compared to traditional sawing, laser pipe cutting eliminates the need for saw blades and coolant, resulting in lower electricity and maintenance costs. Although the initial investment is slightly higher, the savings in consumable costs are generally recovered within about a year.

(5) Strong Scalability and Support for Future Upgrades

The current solution supports a pipe-making speed of approximately 15 meters per minute. For future speed increases, an electronic cam function (a more advanced position synchronization method) can be enabled. Furthermore, we are planning to add processes such as online hole drilling, cutting arbitrary shapes, and cutting arc edges, which can be achieved simply by overlaying motion commands without replacing the entire control system.

(6) High Replicability and Suitable for Nationwide Promotion

This solution has already been put into actual production in a number of stainless steel pipe manufacturing plants with stable results. Due to the use of standardized PLC programs and HMI templates, equipment manufacturers can quickly replicate it to different models of online pipe cutting machines.

Integrated HMI + PLC: The “All-in-One” Secret to Reducing Costs and Maximizing Efficiency

In the world of industrial automation, the traditional setup involves a separate Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). While this “split” architecture is standard for high-end, complex systems, it often creates unnecessary hurdles for OEM manufacturers and small-scale automation projects.

If you are struggling with limited cabinet space, rising hardware costs, and tedious communication debugging, the Integrated HMI+PLC Controller solution is the breakthrough you’ve been looking for.

What is an Integrated HMI + PLC (All-in-One)?

An Integrated Controller, often called an “All-in-One,” is a single hardware device that combines the visual interface of a Human-Machine Interface (HMI) with the logic control of a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).

Instead of mounting two separate devices and wiring them together, you have one powerful unit that handles both the “eyes” (display) and the “brain” (logic) of your machine.

Why Choose an Integrated Solution?

For many industries—such as smart Agriculture, packaging machinery, and environmental equipment—efficiency and economy are the top priorities. Here is how an integrated controller like the Samkoon GX and GT series solves real-world problems:

Saving Physical Space

Industrial control cabinets are expensive real estate. By merging the HMI and PLC into a single unit, you eliminate the need for PLC DIN-rail space. This allows for smaller, more compact cabinets, reducing the overall footprint of your machine.

Significant Cost Reduction

An HMI+PLC all-in-one reduces your Bill of Materials (BOM). You save not only on the hardware itself but also on communication cables and the labor costs associated with wiring two separate devices.

Superior Information Exchange Efficiency

In a split system, the HMI and PLC must communicate via external cables.

  • The Problem: Long cables lead to signal attenuation and protocol conversion overhead.
  • The Solution: In an integrated unit, the HMI and PLC are internally deployed. Because they share the same manufacturer’s ecosystem, the communication protocols are natively compatible, resulting in lightning-fast data refresh rates.

The Samkoon Advantage: High-Performance SamSoar2022 Software

What truly sets the Samkoon GX and GT series apart is the upgraded host software: SamSoar2022. A controller is only as good as its development environment, and we’ve built ours for speed, flexibility, and security.

Blazing Fast Development & Deployment

SamSoar2022 offers a compile speed of less than 0.5 seconds and a download speed of less than 3 seconds. More importantly, it supports online editing, allowing you to modify programs on the fly without stopping your production line—a critical feature for reducing downtime.

Versatile Programming with C-Language Support

While we support standard Instruction Lists (IL), Function Block Diagrams (FBD), and SFC Step Ladder programming, we go a step further. Advanced users can write function blocks in C-language, providing the ultimate flexibility for complex algorithms and highly customized user UIs.

Enterprise-Grade Security (Compiled Architecture)

Protecting your hard-earned “know-how” is our priority. SamSoar2022 adopts a strict compiled architecture, ensuring that your program cannot be decoded or cracked once deployed. Your intellectual property remains safe within the hardware.

Seamless Migration & Compatibility

Switching to Samkoon is easier than ever. Our software features rich compatibility with competing products, allowing you to directly convert existing ladder diagrams from other brands into Samkoon-compatible display and control programs. Additionally, you can download PLC programs directly through the HMI screen, simplifying onsite maintenance.
